A three-member delegation from the African Mayoral Leadership Initiative (AMALI) Data Programme has ended a two-day city visit to Accra to strengthen data management, performance tracking and the delivery of the Mayor of Accra’s legacy goal.
The engagement, which forms part of AMALI’s support to city leaders across Africa, is designed to help the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) refine and validate the Mayor’s legacy goal, develop practical performance management models, build a data inventory, identify key performance indicators, and improve the use of evidence-based decision-making in the implementation of priority city projects.
Speaking during the opening session, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey said the initiative was a major priority for his administration and described it as a legacy project that he was determined to deliver.
He said he was happy to receive the AMALI Data Programme team in Accra, adding that their presence demonstrated a shared commitment to improving city governance through data, accountability, and effective performance tracking.
According to him, the project was important to his administration because it would support the city’s efforts to deliver measurable results and improve the lives of residents.
Hon. Allotey who was in the company of the Municipal Chief Executive for Korle Klottey, Hon. Alfred Allotey-Gaisie stated that he had a competent team at the Assembly and expressed confidence that they would work closely with the AMALI team to ensure the success of the engagement. He said his administration was committed to excellence and would not settle for average performance, delivering every one of the city’s priority interventions.
The Mayor said before leaving South Africa, he had assured the AMALI team that he would do everything within his power to ensure that the project became a reality, stressing that he remained fully committed to that assurance.
He disclosed that beyond the support from AMALI, he was also engaging the central government to mobilise the necessary backing for the successful implementation of the legacy project.
He thanked the AMALI Data Programme delegation for the visit and expressed optimism that the engagement would mark the beginning of significant progress in the delivery of the Mayor’s legacy goal.
Hon. Allotey urged participants to work closely with the AMA team and provide feedback where necessary, assuring them that he remained available to intervene on any issue that required his attention.
The Programme Lead of the AMALI Data Programme, Ms. Mawande Ngidi, said the African Mayoral Leadership Initiative was designed to support mayors, governors and city leaders across the continent to deliver bold, citizen-facing goals.
He said the programme provided tailored technical assistance and support to city leaders by helping them develop the skills and structures needed to form dedicated delivery teams and drive progress on their legacy goals.
Ms. Ngidi said the Accra city visit was intended to support the Mayor and his team to align around the legacy goal, define key performance indicators and develop a performance management framework for tracking delivery.
He said the engagement would also help the city to better leverage data in managing performance and improving implementation of priority projects.
Ms. Ngidi said the engagement would enable the city team to identify existing data gaps, review available datasets, and develop practical tools to support data-driven public sector delivery.
