The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has kicked off its Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana Week Celebration, with staff across the Assembly dressed in Ghanaian print to promote local culture, national identity and support for home-grown industries.
The first day of the celebration, dubbed Corporate Ghana Day, focused on encouraging staff to proudly wear Ghanaian attire to work as a visible demonstration of support for locally made fabrics and fashion.
To mark the day, a team from the Assembly’s Public Affairs Unit visited various offices to take photographs and videos of staff in their Ghanaian print outfits as part of efforts to document and promote participation in the initiative.
Speaking in an interview, the Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, explained that the activities were intended to bring Ghanaian culture into the formal workplace and use the corporate environment as a platform to project pride in local heritage.
He said the activity also formed part of a broader public campaign to encourage greater appreciation of Ghanaian products, particularly in the areas of clothing and food.
Mr. Ankrah noted that staff were urged to share pictures and videos from the event on social media by tagging @AccraMetropolis and using the hashtag #EatGhanaWearGhana to help broaden public awareness and participation.
He pointed out that the decision to begin the week-long celebration with Corporate Ghana Day reflected the important role institutions and organised workplaces could play in promoting cultural values and supporting local enterprises.
He added that the initiative was meant to remind residents and workers that choosing Ghanaian food and clothing was not only a cultural expression but also an economic decision that contributed to the growth of local businesses and industries.
Mr. Ankrah stressed that the celebration aligned with the Mayor of Accra’s agenda to promote a vibrant city culture anchored on creativity, heritage and civic pride.
He reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to initiatives that celebrated Ghanaian identity and encouraged public support for local production.
The celebration will continue on Tuesday, March 17, with a “Rep Your Region” cultural display, where participants are expected to showcase the culture and traditions of the various regions of Ghana.
Wednesday has also been designated as Fugu Day and will feature traditional games, while Thursday will climax the celebration with a cooking competition highlighting Ghanaian dishes.
