AMA removes illegal pigsty impeding National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise at Agbogbloshie

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has removed an unauthorised pigsty at Agbogbloshie that was obstructing the ongoing National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise, after its operators failed to comply with a final warning to remove the structure.

The exercise was part of the Assembly's efforts to facilitate the movement of heavy-duty equipment and personnel engaged in evacuating accumulated waste from the area and restoring environmental cleanliness.

The demolition followed a final warning notice served on the operators on Thursday, October 8, 2026, when the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, accompanied by the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Mr Douglas N.K. Annoful led a team of officials to inspect the ongoing waste evacuation exercise at Agbogbloshie.

Speaking after the exercise, the Mayor explained that despite the warning and the opportunity given to the operators to remove the structure, they failed to comply, prompting the enforcement action.

He disclosed that despite obstructing the ongoing National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise the pigsty had been established and operated without the requisite permit or approval from the AMA, in contravention of the Assembly's by-laws regulating animal-rearing activities within the metropolis.

The Mayor cited the Control of Animals By-law, 2017, of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, which prohibits individuals from keeping swine, cattle, sheep, goats and other specified animals within its jurisdiction without a permit issued by the Assembly.

He explained that the provisions were intended to regulate animal-rearing activities, safeguard public health, prevent environmental nuisances, and ensure that livestock were kept under appropriate sanitary conditions.

He stressed that the National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise required unrestricted access for payloaders, excavators, tipper trucks, and other heavy-duty machinery deployed to collect and transport accumulated waste from Agbogbloshie.

Mayor Allotey reiterated that individuals intending to engage in livestock farming or other commercial activities within the metropolis must obtain the requisite permits and operate only within locations approved by the appropriate authorities.

The Mayor cautioned residents and business operators against erecting unauthorised structures or engaging in activities that obstruct public access, impede sanitation operations, or undermine development interventions.

He reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to enforcing its by-laws and supporting the National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise to restore environmental cleanliness, improve public health and promote orderliness within the metropolis.
