AMA announces ' Christmas in Accra Clean-Up Drive'; Mayor Allotey calls for citywide participation

15.Dec.2025

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced the 'Christmas in Accra Clean-Up Drive', a week-long sanitation exercise across the metropolis aimed at intensifying cleanliness efforts and sustaining the gains made during the recent NSD exercise ahead of the Christmas festivities.

The initiative follows directives from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA) and the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) after a successful National Sanitation Day (NSD) clean-up exercise held last Saturday.

According to the AMA, the 'Accra Christmas Clean-Up Drive' was aimed at intensifying sanitation actions, promoting responsible waste management, and improving cleanliness in communities, markets, and public spaces within the capital

Speaking after the last NSD exercise for the year on Saturday, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey said the clean-up activities would be carried out daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and appealed to residents to plan and dedicate time to cleaning their immediate surroundings.

He stated that the exercise was expected to cover homes, shops, offices, frontages, market stalls, lorry stations, and drainage lines, stressing that keeping shared spaces clean required collective effort and consistency beyond the NSD period.

The Mayor said the itinerary would begin with a mop-up operation at Chemunaa on Monday, followed by a clean-up activity at Dogo Beach on Tuesday, adding that additional locations would be announced in the full schedule to be released.

Mayor Allotey urged community leaders, residents’ associations, market groups, transport unions, sanitation service providers, and other partners to support the programme and help sustain the gains made through the NSD campaign.

He reminded the public that the clean-up week formed part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen public hygiene and protect health, particularly during the end-of-year period when commercial activity increases and waste generation typically rises.

The Mayor added that the AMA would provide updates as the week progresses and appealed to the public to cooperate fully to ensure the exercise achieves its intended impact across the metropolis.
