The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey on Tuesday inspected a beach cleanup exercise at Chorkor, aimed at improving environmental sanitation, protecting public health, and restoring the city’s coastline.
The initiative being undertaken by Mayekoo, a social impact crowdfunding platform based in Accra, in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), is expected to help remove accumulated waste from the beach, improve sanitary conditions in the area, and contribute to broader efforts to reclaim and maintain the coastline.
The Mayor during the inspection said the exercise aligned with his administration’s commitment to practical action on sanitation and beach restoration adding that the Assembly was interested in seeing the Chorkor beach restored not only for sanitation reasons but also as part of a long-term vision to unlock the economic potential of Accra’s coastline.
According to him, cleaner and better-managed beaches could in the future support tourism-related investments, including hotel development, while creating jobs for young people and boosting the local economy.
He noted that beach cleaning remained one of his priorities despite the many competing responsibilities of his office and assured the AMAs' preparedness to support the cleanup efforts in the city.
The Mayor assured the Mayekoo team that the Assembly was ready to provide the needed backing to make their intervention visible and effective.
Assemblyman for the Chorkor Electoral Area and Chairman for the Ablekuma South Sub-Metro, Hon. Theophilus Isaac Quaye stressed the need to create a proper access route from the roadside to the beach.
Mr. Robert Mills Lamptey, Programmes lead for Mayekoo, said the organisation intended to expand its operations to Chorkor after initially visiting Chorkor to assess the condition of the beach.
The Mayekoo lead disclosed that the current intervention involved a large-scale mechanical beach cleanup followed by a volunteer-driven exercise on Saturday, April 25.
He said the volunteer component, scheduled for Saturday, would draw participation from several corporate institutions, including Prudential Life Insurance, Clifton Homes and Gripe, among others.
Beyond the immediate cleanup, he announced that the organisation intended to adopt the Chorkor beach for one year, during which it would return at least twice every month to undertake maintenance exercises using its self-rig equipment, tractor and plough.
