The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has released approved environmental and social safeguard documents for the Accra Waste Source Segregation and Composting Project (AWSSCP) to promote transparency and ensure public access to information on the project.

The documents include the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Resettlement Action Plan (RAP), and Framework Agreement Environmental and Social Management Plan (FA-ESMP).

The release of the document was in accordance with the environmental and social safeguard requirements of the African Development Bank (AfDB) and applicable national regulations.

According to the Head of Public Affairs at the AMA ,Gilbert Nii Ankrah, who disclosed this said the AWSSCP was aimed at improving municipal solid waste management in Accra through the introduction of source segregation, improved waste collection systems and the development of composting infrastructure.

The project, he said, was expected to divert organic waste from landfills, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve environmental quality within the metropolis.

He assured that the AMA  was committed to implementing the project in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible manner, adding that the release of the safeguard documents formed part of measures to ensure openness, accountability and stakeholder participation.

He explained that the safeguard documents contained the project’s environmental and social assessments, identified potential impacts, and outlined measures to avoid, minimise, mitigate, and monitor environmental and social risks throughout implementation.

He pointed out that the documents would allow residents, stakeholders, civil society organisations, community members, institutions, and the general public to access relevant information on the project and the safeguards to be applied during implementation.

Mr Ankrah said the disclosure was also intended to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to review the project documents and make inputs that would support effective implementation.

He also urged residents and stakeholders to download and review the approved safeguard documents once the links are made available, stressing that public participation remained critical to the successful implementation of the project.
