The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing strategic global partnerships aimed at promoting inclusive growth and sustainable urban development in the capital.
According to the Assembly, it remained open to engaging cities and municipalities worldwide in the establishment of sister city partnerships.
The Head of International Relations at the AMA, Mr Bashiru Salifu, who affirmed the Assembly’s commitment, said such partnerships were intended to promote collaboration in key areas, including trade, culture, innovation, governance, and knowledge exchange, as part of broader efforts to position Accra as a city open to international cooperation and progress.
He stated that the AMA welcomes expressions of interest from cities and municipalities seeking to build formal ties with Accra, stressing that such engagements could create opportunities for institutional learning, economic cooperation and the sharing of best practices in urban management and development.
Mr Salifu explained that the move formed part of its wider commitment to city diplomacy and efforts to strengthen relationships that would contribute meaningfully to the growth and transformation of the city.
He also acknowledged the important role of fellow Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies within Greater Accra, describing them as critical partners in local governance and development.
The Head of International Relations pointed out that the leadership and initiative of the various sister assemblies were essential to expanding collective international engagement across the capital and ensuring that the benefits of global partnerships were felt more broadly at the local level.
He encouraged sister assemblies within Accra to engage the Office of International Relations at the AMA for guidance and technical support in identifying, initiating and formalising Sister City partnerships with cities of their choice.
Mr Salifu assured that the AMA stood ready to provide the necessary assistance to help local assemblies navigate the process of developing such partnerships and building sustainable relationships with international counterparts.
He stressed that the AMA remained committed to supporting collaborative efforts that would strengthen institutional capacity and deliver shared benefits for communities.
He assured that the Assembly was prepared to work with both international city authorities and local government partners to build lasting partnerships capable of contributing to development outcomes across multiple sectors.
He called on interested parties to contact the Office of International Relations at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for further engagement on Sister City partnerships.
